Piping layout integrated in ship design and stability assessment

The assessment of damage stability in ship design originally is based on a limited number of aspects, however gradually more aspects are involved. Including the connections between compartments by pipes and ducts, as well as their layout, is a new step in assessing damage stability closer to reality. The development of a new system in PIAS ship design software enables users to assess damage stability based on initial damage cases and the flooding of undamaged compartments through pipe or duct connections with damaged compartments. In that sense damage cases are no longer necessarily static cases with predefined stages of flooding and have evolved to cases where the initial damage case is defined and the progress of flooding can be assessed time depended and with consideration of the dimensions and shape of the connection(s) between the damaged and undamaged yet connected compartment(s).
